How We Work

Goals

We work with our manager to create 3–5 goals (or so) every quarter. Our goals are an agreement between us and our manager about our priorities for the quarter and how we know if we’re successful. Joel starts us off by setting the company goals. Then, his direct reports, on so on, until everyone has their goals for the quarter.

Performance Reviews

We get a performance review from our manager every quarter: we get a written version in CEO-S software and have a 1-on-1 conversation with our manager. The outcomes of our goals are the basis of how your performance is evaluated.

How We Communicate

We like to be thoughtful and intentional in our chosen communication channel. The channel of communication carries meaning on its own, before we ever send communication.

Email

Email is a channel for general communication.

It’s a low-urgency channel; it doesn’t get answered right away. If we have a same-day request of someone, we’re aware that they might not see the email that same day. We generally reply to emails by the next day.

Google Chat

Google Chat a channel for getting attention quickly. It’s a channel for quick information exchange. It’s not the best channel for longform writing, complex ideas, or important decisions.

Google Meet

We use Google Meet for virtual meetings. Google Meet links are auto-generated in Google Calendar events. Don’t send Zoom, Teams, or other random meeting links. Google Meet works in the browser, saving everyone from downloading a bunch of meeting apps.

Google Docs

Google Docs is indeed a communication channel. It’s how we log important decisions we make to ensure everyone has access, and the decisions can be referenced later.
